Who Should Participate

If you answer "yes" to one or more of these questions then you should sign up and participate:

1) Have you been impacted by COVID-19, droughts or fires?
2) Do you want to be part of a team that creates an innovative solution for the business you work for or to launch as a new business?
3) Do you want to network with influential brands, other professionals, potential employers, investors, and business mentors?
4) Do you want to contribute to the recovery of our economy and carving out a new, sustainable and resilient economic landscape?

You don't need to be technical or specialised to be involved and it's completely free. So sign up and be part of a movement that affects every single one of us.

Problems to Hack

When you register you will be asked to choose a category to focus on. Under that category you and your team will work together to come up with a solution that solves a particular problem statement.

Categories are:

1) Domestic Violence
2) Travel and Tourism
3) Waste and Recycling
4) Manufacturing and Wholesale Trade
5) Employment and Housing
6) Hospitality and Retail Trade

Problem statements to solve include:

1) As a result of COVID-19, there is growing unemployment, increased anxiety and financial stress, and a scarcity of community resources. Countries all over the world are already reporting an increase in demand for services relating to domestic violence. The stage has been set for an exacerbated domestic violence crisis. How can we use technology to help women navigate their way through the various forms of domestic violence and protect themselves and their children before a crisis occurs? How can we assist women to find their own voice?

2) Aussie destinations like Uluru, the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns, and even tourism operators in big cities like Sydney and Melbourne depend on international tourists to stay afloat.  Unfortunately homegrown holidaymakers tend to go down the coast or to the farm and don’t choose those destinations in the same numbers.  How can we get domestic tourists to act (and spend) more like international ones?

3) How can the travel industry rapidly diversify services and reallocate resources to in-demand sectors when required? An example of this might be to rapidly retrofit commercial planes to carry freight.

4) As face masks begin to wash up on our shores and our focus shifts to personal protection and away from waste reduction and recycling, how can we rapidly revitalise the urgency of ethical and environmentally friendly waste management and what can we do to address it?

5) How can we encourage local manufacturing and trade, particularly of essential goods and services, to ensure we are capable of independence in the event of a crisis? Additionally, how can this be done in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way?

6) How can businesses rapidly up-skill or cross-skill staff internally to address changes in resource-demand. Where internal resource reallocation isn't possible, how can sectors rapidly redeploy - permanently or temporarily - human resources to address surging demand? Where redundancies and reallocations are not possible, how can we temporarily or permanently house those affected quickly to avoid unnecessary homelessness?

7) Some brick and mortar retail and hospitality outlets are bound by physical space and people – both customers and staff. If (or when) another crisis hits, how could these types of businesses rapidly adapt or pivot to survive without having to shut down entirely, cut staff and/or shift to an online-only environment? Or what should the new consumer culture look like without losing community.

Types of Solutions

Hackathons aren't just a about technology. They are a forum where people come together to solve problems collectively.

Technology is a great way to solve problems and there will certainly be a lot of technological solutions to come from this event, but don't worry if you want to solve a problem statement without using technology.

The solutions to come from the hackathon could be tech, services, community initiatives, social campaigns/movements, hardware, etc. Anything you can think of really.

Judging Criteria

Judges will score the 2-minute video pitches (due by 4pm on July 16th) on the following criteria:

1) Has the solution addressed the problem statement
2) Is the solution resilient to future crises
3) Will the solution create jobs locally
4) Is the solution viable (is it possible, is it needed, is it wanted, will the target audience buy/engage with it)
5) Bonus: Is the solution environmentally or socially sustainable and ethical

We will even have a few "mystery judges and investors" watching, so don't worry if you don't come in the top three because you could very well get noticed anyway!

Commercialisation & Support

The partners supporting this event want you to succeed - whether you are one of the three winning teams or not.

Winning teams will be provided with free or discounted goods and services designed to get their solution to market. The remaining participating teams will be supported too because the more great ideas we can get to market the better for us all.

All teams will have access to mentors on the day as well as discounts and other incentives from partners after the event. We will also be asking you what you need after the event and will tailor a program as best we can with whatever resources we have.

You're in good hands, so join us!

Technology Info

We will be using Microsoft Teams for the workshops and hackathon. Make sure you attend the workshop on how to use Teams if you're not sure.

Workshops, the live Q&A panel, and watching the video pitches will be done via Teams Live Events.
Working within your groups virtually will be done via a Teams meeting.

We will create all of this for you, from sending you your login details to putting you in the right group, to creating the Teams meeting for your group.

Everything will be emailed to you but if you're unsure then please contact us at info@limehub.com.au and we can offer some advice or support.

Why We Are Doing This

Every single one of us has been or will be affected by a large-scale crisis in our lifetime - if not droughts, bushfires, viruses, recessions, depressions, war, then something else. It's not a matter of if but a matter of when. While that might sound gloomy, we can use this time as an opportunity to change the way things have been done in the past and move into a more resilient and sustainable future. Interpret that however you wish, but let's work together to be better than ever.

LimeHub, with support from Partners and volunteers, are running this event totally not-for-profit. We are all putting in our time and resources to deliver this event entirely for free because we believe that it's incumbent on us to do everything we possibly can to support our economy in sustainable way. After all, it affects us all.

So, we hope that you, your colleagues, your friends, and your family will join us from the 9th of July for a series of virtual workshops and on the 16th of July for a full day of real and impactful innovation.

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much", Helen Keller.
